Name: Seeing Music, Hearing Canvas Event in Downtown Brainerd
Date: July 14, 2018
Time: 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM CDT
Event Description:
Musical and visual artists will share an outdoor stage, each being inspired by and playing off the work of the other. Bruce Archer will perform while artists Lea Anderson, Greg Gray, and Heidi Jeub create original works on large canvases—a dialogue among artists working in their varied media. You will be drawn into the visual / musical jam session yet free to move on and shop, grab a bite to eat or a drink, and return to see the artists' progress. At the end of the two-hour performance, each visual artist will have created a one-of-a-kind piece that resonates with the musical performance that inspired and fueled it. The event will be held in the parking lot located on Laurel Street near 7th Street in between The Hockey House and Sage on Laurel. It is free to attend.

This is the first of five events associated with deTOUR Downtown which is an initiative to bring people to Downtown Brainerd during the South 6th Street road construction this summer. “We have room for you downtown,” said Mike Angland, Brainerd Restoration President. “All of the public parking lots are open and there is plenty of on-street parking available so just follow the detour signs to get to the core business district.”

Downtown businesses will display the artwork through the remainder of the deTOUR Downtown / construction season, then the pieces will be presented to the top donors to the deTOUR Downtown funding campaign. You will be able to view the pieces at Sage on Laurel, Picture Perfect Framing Studio, and Fancy Pants Chocolates.

SEEING MUSIC/HEARING CANVAS — ARTIST PROFILES

Lea Anderson, Artist
Lea has enjoyed being an art teacher for more than 20 years and an artist for as long as she can remember. She loves to create, using her hands and mind together in many different mediums—clay, paint, collage, beading and bookmaking. Her inspiration and passion come from many avenues of life—studying works of art, traveling to new places, and trying new things. She pays close attention to her surroundings, takes it in, and later includes it into her artwork. Creativity and art are a big part of the core of Lea’s soul.

Bruce Archer, Musician
Bruce has been a songwriter, singer, and guitar player nearly all his life, including playing in Minneapolis’ post-punk, alt-rock venues for more than a decade. After a long hiatus—including relocating with the family to the Brainerd area in 2002—he returned to performing originals and deep covers in his signature hybrid bluegrass-folk-blues style that lands under the huge umbrella of Americana.

Gregory Gray, Artist
Over the course of his career, Greg has explored a range of artistic styles and mediums. He recently came to the Brainerd area after spending several years spreading his upbeat message through art, murals, caricatures, and humorous sketches across the country, with stints in Chicago, New Orleans, Memphis, and New York. Just before his return to Minnesota, Greg spent several years sharing his talents with audiences and clients across Florida, including Walt Disney World and Church Street Station in Orlando.

Heidi Jeub, Artist
Heidi is a nationally-known, award-winning visual artist, book binder, public artist, and all-arts advocate from Central MN. She has served as the director of Visual Arts Minnesota, chair of the Independent Music Collaborative of Central Minnesota, and mastermind of the new Small But Noteworthy art event in Little Falls. She has her masters in Arts & Cultural Leadership from the UMN, where she focused her research on rural communities and inequities in resource distribution to the margins of our society. Her studio, Heijeu, Inc., is located in Little Falls.
